Pysanky: Ukrainian Easter Eggs

Look at this page to find out how to make traditional Ukrainian Easter Eggs!

Pysankarstvo is the art of making pysanka. It is a tradition that stretches back to the dawn of Ukrainian history, passed along from generation to generation by a long line of pysankarky.  Here is another link where you can find more history and guidelines!

Orthodox Easter actually begins next Sunday, April 15th, which is also the day I arrive in Ukraine. I will be in Kyiv, the capital city, for most of the first week. All of my research says Orthodox Easter usually falls two weeks after our Easter, but this year it begins on the 15th. Below is a portion of an e-mail from my host teacher in Odessa that explains a bit more about what I cane expect.

"It is possible to go to an Orthodox church and be there as long as you wish - 10 or 20 or 40 minutes or so. You know our Easter is two weeks later , so you will be during a very important time - a week after Easter is still Easter time and the Sunday after Easter is the time when people go to the graveyards to remember their relatives. It is a big holiday. The church services are very special all this week."

One of my current students actually got a Pysanky making kit as a birthday present from her grandparents. She was going to work on creating Pysanky eggs over spring break. I'm excited to hear her report on Monday!
